The crane carries profound meaning in Asian culture: a symbol of longevity and elegance, of grace sustained across time. It is perhaps fitting that MEI, the contemporary Asian dining concept at Jumeirah Mina Al Salam, takes this as its spiritual anchor. A year has passed since the restaurant opened its doors, and in that interval it has woven itself into the fabric of Dubai’s dining landscape with a particular kind of magnetism.

MEI emerges from the vision of SHI Hospitality Group, a Dubai based collective devoted to creating immersive destinations where gastronomy, design and culture converge with intention. The restaurant marries Chinese and Japanese culinary traditions with an evolving programme of live music and entertainment that transforms the evening into something considerably more expansive than a meal. Here, dining becomes ritual. The table becomes gathering place. The night becomes something to be inhabited rather than merely experienced.

What distinguishes MEI is its refusal of conventional categorisation. It is neither formal nor casual, neither restaurant nor nightclub, yet partakes of all these dimensions. The considered Asian gastronomy unfolds alongside a carefully curated calendar of DJs and live singers. Guests settle into an evening that begins at table and extends into the hours when the city itself seems to draw closer, when the vibrant atmosphere and flowing drinks create their own momentum.

A Year of Moments

To mark the first anniversary, MEI celebrates during its Saturday Night Brunch from seven o’clock onwards on the 10th of October. The evening carries all the elements that have come to define the restaurant: its signature dining experience, live entertainment and the particular energy that has drawn people back repeatedly. Each guest receives a complimentary glass of bubbles, a gesture that transforms the evening into a collective toast to the year that has passed and the potential of those still to come.

This anniversary is ultimately a reflection on what MEI has accomplished beyond the obvious. Yes, there is the culinary offering, refined and purposeful. Yes, there is the distinctive interior design that frames every moment. But the true achievement lies in what has accumulated around the table: the guests who have made MEI part of their dining rituals, the moments that have crystallised into memory, the recognition that a restaurant of consequence is built not merely from ingredients and décor but from the people who gather within it and the atmosphere they collectively create.

SHI Hospitality Group, founded by Diana Rysbaeva, has established itself through concepts that balance heritage with innovation, refined culinary tradition with contemporary narrative. MEI represents the group’s evolution: a space where Asian dining takes on new dimension, where the evening programme proves as essential as the kitchen’s work, where longevity and elegance, much like the crane itself, become the guiding principle.
