A 1988 Aston Martin V8 Volante Zagato Vantage rests in the Heritage showroom, still wearing its original Gladiator Red and black Connolly leather, with barely 59 miles on the odometer since leaving the factory. Finished with its matching black hood, this convertible represents something almost extinct: a car ordered, delivered and then sealed away from the world, preserved as though still waiting for its first real journey.

Of the 89 Zagato variants Aston Martin commissioned from the Italian coachbuilder between 1986 and 1990, only 37 were Volantes. Rarer still, just seven of those convertibles received the Vantage X pack: the 430 bhp 5.3 litre V8 engine with twin choke Weber carburettors that transformed the car into a 186 mph heavyweight. Most Volantes were fitted with a less powerful 320 bhp V585 V8. This particular example occupies that supremely exclusive territory.

The car remained unregistered when it arrived at its first owner in 1988. Professional care in climate controlled environments has kept it unspoilt and as delivered, the paintwork still sharp, the leather unmarked, every mechanical system preserved. Thirty six years later, it has known no public road, no weather, no real use.
