The collaboration between Maison Margiela and Gentle Monster unveils a considered collection of sunglasses and optical frames that challenge the conventions of eyewear design. At its core sits a principle of deconstruction, the house code of Maison Margiela, realised here through an unexpected detail: stitches woven as though floating above the frame edges, a visual disruption that transforms the ordinary into something altogether more conceptual.
The tortoiseshell acetate frames shown here in warm mahogany tones carry the refined proportions of Gentle Monster’s design vocabulary, while the pale amber lenses soften the gaze. The cream coloured stitching sits proud of the frame, catching light and drawing the eye to what might otherwise pass unnoticed. This is eyewear that asks to be examined, that rewards close attention with its thoughtful construction.
The collection reflects both houses’ commitment to rigorous design. Maison Margiela, founded by Belgian designer Martin Margiela, has long deconstructed fashion to reveal its inner workings, turning seams and construction into visual poetry. Gentle Monster, the Seoul based eyewear designer founded by Kim Chung and Kim Hae jin, brings architectural precision and an almost sculptural approach to frames. Together, they create pieces that sit between function and art object.
The collection is now available at Dover Street Market in London and through the DSML E Shop, where both sunglasses and optical frames can be explored in full.
