Mannequins dressed in exquisite embroidered pieces stand against a luminous wall of colour swatches, their silhouettes a study in the dialogue between garment and needlework. Hand & Lock, the venerable London embroidery house, opens the Hand & Lock Prize for Embroidery Exhibition 2026 at The Building Centre on Store Street, presenting the year’s finalists and associate award winners in a gallery setting that honours both innovation and technical mastery.
The exhibition distils what drives embroidery forward: the marriage of meticulous handcraft with contemporary vision. Each piece on display represents countless hours of needle and thread, whether worked in gold and silk, or in experimental mixed media that challenges what embroidery can be. The works range from delicate restraint to baroque abundance, from wearable art to sculptural textile installations that demand to be examined close, then stepped back from, then examined again.
Hand & Lock has stewarded embroidery as both heritage and living practice for generations. The prize celebrates designers, makers and students whose work proves that hand embroidery remains urgent, relevant and endlessly inventive. Against the wall behind the mannequins, swatches of colour suggest the breadth of work on show: jewel tones, metallics, pastels and deep blacks all evidence the range of aesthetic directions the finalists have pursued.
The exhibition runs across three days in early November, with extended hours on Thursday and Friday. Entry is free, and the space invites both serious collectors and curious newcomers to witness what happens when precision, imagination and the human hand converge on cloth. The Building Centre, 26 Store Street, London WC1E 7BT, opens Wednesday 4 November from 10am to 1pm, Thursday 5 November and Friday 6 November from 10am to 4pm.
