Another View: The Vibrant World of Contemporary Black Artists arrives as a luminous document of creative practice in our moment. Phaidon Press brings together the carefully observed worlds of twenty artists working across disciplines and geographies, each one granted the intimacy of a studio visit, a conversation, a glimpse into the spaces where vision takes form.
Isolde Brielmaier, the celebrated curator, conducted the interviews that shape the book’s backbone, moving through each artist’s practice with scholarly precision and genuine curiosity. Her conversations sit alongside an illuminating introduction by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., the scholar and critic whose perspective anchors the collection in both historical context and contemporary urgency. The photographs throughout are the work of Awol Erizku, an acclaimed artist whose own practice has long explored identity, presence and the act of witnessing. His lens transforms studio walls, materials in progress, personal objects and the artists themselves into a visual language that feels both tender and searching.
The book unfolds as a series of revelations: how profoundly intimate the act of creation remains, how idiosyncratic each artist’s method, how vital this particular moment is for Black contemporary art. Angela Bassett describes it precisely as both a vital record of the present and a powerful testament to the legacies still being created. Another View reads not as a survey or a checklist but as an extended meditation on what it means to make work, to claim space, to offer vision when the world is watching and listening with fresh attention.
