In the rarefied world of French couture, a parurier occupies a particular space: the unseen hand that transforms a designer’s vision into ornament and jewelled embellishment. Philippe Grand has inhabited that role for more than twenty years, his meticulous craftsmanship supporting the collections of some of France’s most distinguished ateliers. His name rarely appeared on a label. His work spoke for itself, always in service to another’s vision.
Arts and Science saw something different. When the Tokyo house encountered Grand, they recognised not merely a technician but an artist in his own right. The proposition they offered was a departure from everything he had known: to step from behind the curtain and create under his own name. The brooch he has made for Arts and Science represents not a commission executed in someone else’s aesthetic, but Grand’s first true independent work, a moment of emergence as an artist rather than a craftsman in the shadows.
Japan holds particular significance in this gesture. Tokyo will be the setting for Grand’s debut, the first stage on which his work appears as his own. The brooch arrives at Arts and Science Aoyama on 20 November, where it will be shown alongside the full interview and documentation of Grand’s practice and his relationship with the house. The studio walls visible behind him in the portrait speak to decades of precision, of tools and materials arranged with the care of someone who understands that beauty emerges from rigour. This work honours that discipline whilst claiming it, finally, as his own.
Arts and Science Aoyama is located at 4 23 11 Minami Aoyama, Minato ku, Tokyo, open daily from 11:00 to 19:00, closed Tuesdays.
