A Rolex Certified Pre-Owned watch presented with its distinctive green-and-white certification seal

There is an arresting simplicity to the latest figures surrounding Rolex Certified Pre-Owned. Sales recorded through the programme reached $385.4 million during the first half of 2026, an increase of 101.3 per cent over the same period a year earlier.

That performance is notable not merely because the figure has doubled. It suggests that a programme introduced less than four years ago has moved decisively beyond its pilot phase, becoming an important part of how Rolex watches are authenticated, presented and sold for a second time.

The figures represent estimated transaction value across the market rather than disclosed corporate revenue from Rolex. Even with that distinction, the direction is unmistakable: brand-backed certification is becoming an increasingly powerful force in the Rolex secondary market.

From experiment to substantial sales channel

Rolex introduced its Certified Pre-Owned programme at selected Bucherer points of sale in 2022 before extending it to participating retailers across its official network. The premise was carefully controlled: eligible second-hand Rolex watches would be authenticated by the manufacture, serviced, tested and returned to the market with a fresh international guarantee.

By the first half of 2025, sales recorded through the programme stood at approximately $191 million. One year later, that value had climbed beyond $385 million. Such acceleration indicates more than a short-lived enthusiasm for pre-owned watches. It points to the commercial appeal of moving the secondary transaction into an environment shaped by Rolex standards.

The programme remains a relatively contained part of the wider Rolex market, but it is no longer peripheral. Total secondary-market sales of Rolex watches reached approximately $4.29 billion in the first half of 2026, up 43.5 per cent year on year. Certified Pre-Owned represented around 9 per cent of that value.

Certification has become part of the product

In luxury watchmaking, uncertainty can be expensive. Condition, provenance, replacement components and the quality of earlier servicing all influence the desirability of a pre-owned timepiece. The difficulty for a buyer is that these details are not always immediately visible, even to an experienced eye.

Rolex’s answer is to turn assurance into a tangible component of the purchase. Watches entering the programme must be at least two years old and are returned to the brand’s workshops, where their configuration and individual components are examined. Each watch is fully serviced and tested under stringent conditions before returning to a participating official retailer.

The resulting object is therefore more than a second-hand watch with an additional certificate. It is presented as a complete Rolex proposition, accompanied by a dedicated seal, guarantee card, service booklet, pouch and official papers. A new two-year international guarantee begins on the date of its Certified Pre-Owned sale.

That combination gives the buyer something traditionally difficult to obtain in the secondary market: authentication and after-sales assurance bearing the authority of the manufacture itself.

The changing appeal of the unworn watch

Perhaps the most revealing development is the relationship between Certified Pre-Owned sales and the trade in unworn Rolex watches outside the authorised new-watch network.

During the first half of 2025, the estimated value of unworn Rolex sales stood at approximately $444 million, comfortably ahead of the Certified Pre-Owned category. In the equivalent period of 2026, unworn sales fell to around $335 million while officially certified sales rose to $385.4 million.

For the first time in this dataset, the certified category had overtaken the unworn trade. The crossover does not prove that one caused the other; availability, pricing and broader market conditions all affect secondary sales. Nevertheless, it illustrates a changing hierarchy of value.

An untouched watch was once assumed to hold an automatic advantage. The latest figures suggest that many clients will instead place considerable value on a pre-owned example that has passed through Rolex’s own certification and servicing process. Newness, in other words, is not the only form of reassurance.

Trust commands a luxury premium

The success of the programme also reflects the character of the modern Rolex buyer. Collectors are increasingly comfortable researching and purchasing significant watches beyond the traditional new-watch counter, yet they remain acutely conscious of authenticity and condition.

Certified Pre-Owned bridges those positions. It offers immediate access to a changing selection of references, including discontinued and earlier-generation models, while retaining the atmosphere and service associated with an official Rolex retailer.

This matters because the secondary purchase is being elevated from a trade in existing objects to a carefully staged luxury experience. The final bracelet sizing, dedicated presentation and formal documentation are not incidental details. Together, they place the watch within the same carefully governed world as a new Rolex.

Some buyers will continue to prefer independent dealers, private transactions or auctions. Rolex Certified Pre-Owned is not designed to replace every route into collecting. Its advantage lies in serving clients for whom certainty, convenience and official support justify a different proposition.

A longer relationship with every watch

Rolex has always built much of its identity around durability. A watch intended to function for decades may pass between generations and owners, accumulating a history well beyond its original sale. Certified Pre-Owned allows the brand to play an active role at a later point in that life.

That role has both practical and symbolic value. Genuine replacement parts can be used where required, although priority is given to preserving the integrity and history of the watch. Rolex also acknowledges that certain older pieces may have exceptions concerning original precision or waterproofness, an important distinction when dealing with watches from different eras.

More broadly, the programme strengthens the connection between longevity and luxury. A durable product is not merely one that survives. It is one that can be serviced, authenticated and confidently returned to use.

For Rolex, the second transaction has become another opportunity to affirm the qualities associated with the first: precision, reliability, presentation and trust.

The rise of Rolex Certified Pre-Owned is ultimately a story about authority. In a vast and sometimes opaque secondary market, the manufacture has created an official route through which a watch’s next chapter can begin with unusually strong assurances.

Sales of $385.4 million in six months show that collectors are responding. The Rolex crown has long signified more than the watch beneath it; now, increasingly, it also governs what happens when that watch changes hands.
