ASTON MARTIN VALKYRIE HYPERCAR COMPLETES SILVERSTONE DEVELOPMENT TEST AHEAD OF 2027 WEC RETURN

On 19 August 2026, a development version of the Aston Martin Valkyrie Hypercar took to Silverstone’s 3.66-mile Grand Prix circuit for the first time. The competition car retains the fundamental character of the production Valkyrie while incorporating extensive modifications for endurance racing. Its carbon-fibre chassis has been developed for competition use, while the road car’s 6.5-litre naturally aspirated V12 has been adapted for the demands of the Hypercar regulations.
In standard production form, the engine is capable of producing more than 1,000bhp and reaches 11,000rpm. Racing regulations, however, restrict the competition car to a maximum output of 500kW, or approximately 680bhp. The result is a machine whose engineering is shaped as much by the requirements of endurance racing as by the extraordinary capabilities of its road-going counterpart.
The Valkyrie’s first two seasons in international competition have provided Aston Martin with an increasingly detailed understanding of that engineering package. The 2026 campaign has already produced encouraging results in both major endurance championships.

In the FIA WEC, the Valkyrie achieved its first double-points finish at the 6 Hours of São Paulo, with Aston Martin’s two entries classified sixth and ninth. In IMSA, Ross Gunn and Roman De Angelis were classified fifth after finishing second on the road, marking the Valkyrie’s sixth top-ten result from seven starts in North America’s premier sports-car championship.
Those results have given the development team a stronger foundation from which to investigate further performance gains. The focus is no longer simply on understanding a new car’s fundamental characteristics; with substantial racing mileage now accumulated, engineers can begin examining how the underlying package might be developed further.
That process is necessarily measured. Endurance racing places demands on a car that extend beyond outright speed, requiring performance to be maintained over long distances while managing tyres, energy, aerodynamics and reliability. Every technical change therefore has to be evaluated in the context of the complete vehicle rather than in isolation.
The Silverstone test formed part of that process. The team assessed a range of developments while collecting data that can be compared with information already gathered from competition running. Such testing allows engineers to examine the behaviour of individual systems in controlled conditions before deciding how, or whether, those developments should progress.
The circuit itself adds another dimension. Silverstone is not only the venue for the forthcoming British WEC round but also home to Aston Martin’s motorsport operations and the AMR Technology Campus. Its importance to the marque makes the return of the WEC especially significant.

For Aston Martin, the 2027 6 Hours of Silverstone will also represent the Valkyrie’s opportunity to compete in the top class of the championship on British soil. The series’ return follows an eight-year absence from the circuit, making the event a notable addition to the endurance calendar.
The preparation is therefore about more than familiarity with a track. Data from the Silverstone running can help the team understand the relationship between the Valkyrie’s aerodynamic package, tyres and circuit characteristics before the championship arrives for the race weekend.
The broader development programme reflects a shift in the Valkyrie’s competitive story. When the car first entered the WEC and IMSA, the priority was establishing a new Aston Martin platform against manufacturers and teams with considerably longer experience in the current Hypercar era. Eighteen months of racing have since provided the engineering team with a much deeper understanding of the car.
That knowledge creates room for more ambitious development. The Silverstone test represents an early stage in that work, rather than a final specification for the Valkyrie’s future competition package.
It is also a reminder of the unusual relationship between Aston Martin’s road and racing programmes. The Valkyrie was conceived as an uncompromising road-going hypercar, developed through a collaboration between Aston Martin and Red Bull Advanced Technologies. Its transformation into a Le Mans Hypercar places that performance philosophy within one of endurance racing’s most tightly regulated environments.
The resulting competition car cannot simply reproduce the specifications of the road-going Valkyrie. Instead, its design and performance are shaped by a combination of production-car heritage, motorsport engineering and the technical limits imposed by the Hypercar regulations.
Silverstone offered a fitting environment in which to examine that balance. The circuit’s association with Aston Martin, British motorsport and the forthcoming WEC race makes it a particularly relevant venue for the next stage of the programme.
As the Valkyrie continues through its second season of international endurance racing, the emphasis is gradually moving from establishing a new platform towards understanding how much further that platform can be developed.
