Sotheby’s Hong Kong Unveils ‘PSYCHO’: A Landmark Exhibition on Desire, Obsession and Artistic Vision

Sotheby's has inaugurated a thematic group exhibition at its Hong Kong Maison that examines the psychological impulses underlying artistic creation. Titled 'PSYCHO: Identity Alienation Shadow Duality', the show unites works across periods, geographies and media to explore how obsession, desire and technical mastery manifest in visual art.

The exhibition occupies the Grotto at LANDMARK CHATER on Connaught Road Central and runs in advance of the house's Modern and Contemporary Evening Auction, presented in partnership with Céline, scheduled for 28–29 September.

A Psychological Lens on Artistic Expression

Rather than organising works by period or school, the curators of 'PSYCHO' have structured the display around thematic resonances that reveal deeper currents in artistic practice. The exhibition interrogates how emotional and psychological states—particularly the tensions between identity formation, alienation and the shadow self—drive aesthetic innovation across distinct traditions.

By positioning contemporary works alongside historical examples, and museum pieces alongside privately held treasures, the exhibition constructs a visual argument about the universality of these impulses. Several monumental works featured in the forthcoming Evening Auction are on public view within the Maison. Notable among these are paintings by Mark Rothko, whose colour field abstractions have long been read as expressions of profound inner states, and immersive installations by Yayoi Kusama, whose infinity rooms and polka-dot repetitions engage themes of obsession and psychological endlessness.

Yoshitomo Nara, the Japanese contemporary painter known for his psychologically charged portraits of solitary figures, also features prominently. These canonical works are presented alongside loans from significant private collections, lending the show a curatorial depth more commonly associated with institutional retrospectives than commercial viewing rooms.
