PERRIER-JOUËT’S REGENERATIVE VINEYARD PROGRAMME BEGINS TO SHAPE THE WINES

For Maison Perrier-Jouët, the move towards regenerative viticulture is rooted in a long-standing relationship with the natural world. The Champagne house began its experimental programme in 2021, initially testing regenerative methods on a small number of hectares before progressively expanding the trials. By 2025, the programme covered 43 per cent of the Maison’s vineyard, according to Perrier-Jouët, with the ultimate objective of converting the entire estate to regenerative viticulture by 2030.
The ambition is broader than replacing one farming technique with another. Perrier-Jouët describes regenerative viticulture as a holistic approach encompassing soil, biodiversity, vines and the people who work among them. Its programme focuses on four principal areas: biomass plant covers, floral plant covers, vitiforestry and green corridors. The aim is to improve soil fertility, strengthen the vines’ resilience to climate change, encourage biodiversity and reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.
The first trials began with carefully structured comparisons, allowing the Maison to observe the effects of different approaches against established vineyard practices. In Champagne, this is particularly relevant because vineyards are planted at high density, leaving limited space for additional vegetation and making the balance between cover crops and vine competition especially important.

Perrier-Jouët has already taken significant steps towards reducing its reliance on conventional vineyard management. The Maison has farmed its entire vineyard according to sustainable viticulture principles since 2016 and ceased using herbicides in 2020. It also introduced an electric Bakus robot for mechanical weed control beneath the vines, helping to limit soil compaction while reducing the weight and environmental impact associated with conventional tractor operations.
The regenerative programme builds upon this foundation. Two of its principal experiments involve different types of plant cover, each with a distinct purpose.
The biomass cover combines plants including fava bean, rye, clover and alfalfa. Sown in autumn, the mixture develops during the cooler months before being flattened or lightly incorporated into the soil. The resulting organic matter helps protect the soil surface and contributes nutrients as it decomposes. Leguminous plants such as fava bean and clover also have the capacity to fix atmospheric nitrogen, making them useful components of a soil-building strategy.
The second approach uses a floral mixture designed to encourage biodiversity alongside improving the soil. Perrier-Jouët has experimented with species including turnip, borage, fennel, mustard and alfalfa. The flowers introduce greater variety into the vineyard environment while providing habitat and resources for insects and other organisms.
The distinction between the two approaches is important. Regenerative viticulture is not a single formula applied uniformly across every parcel. Conditions vary according to soil, grape variety, exposure and local climate, meaning that the Maison is using the trials to understand which practices are best suited to particular vineyard situations.
The early observations have been encouraging. Perrier-Jouët reports improvements in soil structure and porosity across the regenerative plots, alongside increased earthworm populations. Its experiments have also indicated stronger vine growth and improved yields. The Maison has reported higher yields from both cover-crop treatments, while continuing to assess the relationship between vineyard management, grape quality and the resulting wines.
Perhaps the more intriguing development is occurring in the cellar.

The regenerative plots are harvested and vinified separately, allowing the winemaking team to examine the wines without losing sight of their individual vineyard origins. Perrier-Jouët’s 2024 harvest provided an early opportunity to vinify regenerative Chardonnay and Pinot Noir separately, with the Maison describing the resulting wines as promising indications of what the programme could bring to its future style.
For a Champagne house whose identity has long been associated with Chardonnay, this question is particularly pertinent. Perrier-Jouët has cultivated Chardonnay as its signature grape since its foundation, developing a house style known for its floral character and finesse. The effect of vineyard management on the raw material therefore becomes an important part of preserving and evolving that identity.
The Maison’s cellar master, Séverine Frerson, has been closely involved in evaluating the wines produced from the experimental parcels. Since 2020, Frerson has been the eighth cellar master in Perrier-Jouët’s history and the first woman to hold the position. Her role places her at the point where the agricultural experiments ultimately meet the philosophy of blending and vinification that defines the house.
The early cellar work suggests that the differences created in the vineyard may become perceptible in the glass. Regenerative plots have produced wines displaying different expressions of freshness, texture, fruit and complexity, although the Maison continues to regard the work as an ongoing experiment rather than a finished conclusion.
That distinction matters. The purpose of the programme is not simply to produce a measurable agricultural result, but to understand how healthier vineyard ecosystems may influence the character and resilience of the wines over time. The trials are therefore being evaluated across multiple growing seasons, rather than judged on a single harvest.
Perrier-Jouët is also extending its thinking beyond cover crops. Its vitiforestry work introduces trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants into vineyard landscapes, creating a more diverse environment rather than a continuous expanse of vines. The Maison has experimented with different vegetation strata and biodiversity-focused planting, seeking to understand how these additions might contribute to ecosystem health and greater resilience as the climate changes.

This approach has a particular resonance for Perrier-Jouët because nature is not a recent addition to its identity. The Maison was founded in Épernay in 1811 by Pierre-Nicolas Perrier and Rose-Adélaïde Jouët, whose shared interests in wine, art and nature shaped the character of the house from its earliest years. Their son Charles Perrier, who took over in 1848, continued the family’s botanical interests.
That heritage later found its most recognisable artistic expression through the house’s relationship with Art Nouveau. In 1902, Emile Gallé created the Japanese anemone design that became closely associated with Perrier-Jouët. The motif reflected the movement’s fascination with organic forms and established a visual connection between the Maison’s wines, art and the natural world that remains central to its identity.
Today, that relationship is being reconsidered through the practical realities of vineyard management. The objective is no longer simply to draw inspiration from nature, but to cultivate a more resilient relationship with it.
Perrier-Jouët’s ambition to reach 100 per cent regenerative viticulture by 2030 places the current trials within a longer-term programme rather than treating them as a completed sustainability initiative. The Maison also intends to share what it learns with its winegrowing partners, who contribute significantly to its overall grape supply.
There is a quiet significance in the fact that some of the earliest evidence is emerging in the wines themselves. Regenerative viticulture begins beneath the vines, in soil structure, plant diversity and biological activity, yet its consequences may ultimately become apparent through aroma, texture, freshness and balance.
For Perrier-Jouët, the next chapter is therefore being written in two places at once: in the vineyard, where a more diverse ecosystem is gradually taking shape, and in the cellar, where the resulting grapes are being studied with increasing precision. The most interesting measure of the programme may prove to be neither the number of hectares converted nor the machinery removed from the rows, but the subtle ways in which a healthier vineyard begins to express itself in Champagne.
