The language of emptiness and fullness speaks across continents and generations. At the newly opened PARKSEOBO Museum in Seoul, two artists engage in a profound conversation about the nature of painting itself, each approaching the canvas as a site where essence might be distilled to its purest form.

Park Seo Bo, the Korean master who shaped the trajectory of contemporary art from his country, dedicated decades to an investigation of mark, space and the delicate boundaries between presence and absence. His practice unfolds as a meditation, each gesture deliberate, each pause considered. Working across canvases and paper, he built a body of work that remains fundamentally about reduction, about what remains when everything inessential has been stripped away.

Huong Dodinh, the Vietnamese artist born in 1945, approaches painting with a similarly contemplative sensibility. Her work shares with Park’s an understanding that painting is not primarily about representation, but about the artist’s direct engagement with materials, light and the profound quietness that can exist within a composed surface.

By presenting these two artists together in the Museum’s inaugural show, the curators invite us to recognise something vital: that the pursuit of painting’s fundamental truth transcends the specific geography or cultural tradition from which an artist emerges. What connects Park and Huong is not their origin, but their shared conviction that painting, stripped to its essence, becomes a universal language.

The PARKSEOBO Museum stands as a testament to Park Seo Bo’s enduring legacy, housed alongside the PARKSEOBO Foundation. The institution itself becomes an extension of his life’s work, a space devoted to the rigorous examination of what painting can achieve when it is approached with absolute sincerity.

The exhibition remains on view until January 2027, offering an opportunity to sit with these works, to allow them to unfold their particular silence, and to understand how two artists from different worlds arrived at remarkably similar truths about art’s deepest purposes.
