A sculptural staircase and suspended light become one

A sculptural timber staircase curls through a private residence overlooking Lake Geneva, its rich mahogany timber forming a continuous spiral that commands the full vertical axis of the home. Within its sinuous form hangs the NEPENTHES Tendril, a 9.6 metre suspended lighting composition that threads from ceiling to floor, its opalescent spheres descending like a string of luminous pearls caught within the wooden helix.

The collaboration between the staircase and lighting creates something rarer than either could achieve alone. The architect and designer worked in tandem to forge a single unified composition, where the architectural gesture and the light source become inseparable. The sculptural timber wraps and spirals, while the Tendril moves through it, casting a warm amber glow that pools on the pale stone flooring below and illuminates the underside of each timber curve from within.

The interplay of material and light transforms the everyday necessity of vertical circulation into an object of contemplation. The rich brown timber reads almost as shadow against the pale walls and cream ceilings, yet when the suspended spheres glow, they reveal the full three dimensional form of the staircase, layer upon layer of its sculptural geometry. Each globe of light hangs on a slender chain, suggesting lightness within the substantial wooden mass, creating a visual dialogue between weight and weightlessness, solid and ethereal.
The Tendril descends continuously, marking the full height of the interior, illuminating the journey from the upper levels of the home down through its central void to the stone entry below. It is architecture and lighting not as separate disciplines, but as one continuous thought, realised in timber and luminosity.
