Schloss Augarten, the eighteenth century palace that has been home to Vienna’s celebrated porcelain manufactory since 1923, opens its courtyard and gardens once more to the season’s most discerning seekers of handcrafted gifts and festive elegance. From 20 to 22 November, the Christmas market transforms the historic grounds into a gathering of refined makers and curators: artisans working in porcelain, jewellery, homewares and delicate paper goods, alongside purveyors of fine coffee, spiced punch and the Viennese tradition of roasted chestnuts.

The spirit of Augarten itself, which has shaped porcelain for three centuries through the hands of master craftspeople, permeates the weekend. Live porcelain painting allows visitors to commission personalised pieces, while open demonstrations reveal the centuries old techniques that distinguish the manufactory’s work. The porcelain museum at the palace invites deeper discovery of this heritage.

A Market for All Seasons

Beyond the ceramics, the market draws an assembly of Vienna’s most thoughtful brands and makers. The Salonette Collection’s jewellery catches winter light beside textile designers, artisanal paper goods, lifestyle objects and the spiced confections of Hugo’s Box. Altmann and Kühne, a name synonymous with Viennese sweets since 1911, will be present alongside other purveyors of seasonal delicacies.

The weekend carries warmth designed for every age. Children may paint directly onto porcelain plates or join the baking workshop at Dein Anker, where young hands create treats to gift to others. Adults find contemplation in the Advent wreath decoration sessions led by City Farm Vienna, or gather around the Biedermaier coffee bar and warming bowls of punch.

Schloss Augarten’s Christmas market has become a quiet institution among those who understand that the finest gifts emerge from the hands of makers and the discoveries made on unhurried afternoons. This year’s market opens Friday, 20 November from 1 to 5 p.m., continues Saturday, 21 November from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and concludes Sunday, 22 November from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The palace stands at Obere Augartenstraße 1, 1020 Vienna.
