There exists a profound symmetry between the world of haute couture and the realm of contemporary art. Both demand an almost reverential devotion to the imperceptible; both understand that true mastery lives in what remains unseen. Canali, the venerable Italian house whose tailoring has long embodied this philosophy, has now embarked upon an extraordinary exploration of this shared truth through a visionary international project that marries sartorial heritage with contemporary artistic vision.
Under the Surface: Shaping the Unseen presents a meditation on the fundamental question that animates both disciplines: how does the meticulous work undertaken before completion ultimately determine everything that eventually meets the eye and resonates within the soul? It is a question that speaks to the very essence of luxury itself, to that ineffable quality that distinguishes objects and garments crafted with uncompromising devotion.
Four Artists, Four Visions
The project brings together four internationally acclaimed artists, each selected for their distinctive practice and their profound engagement with the concept of hidden depths. Diego Perrone, Brian Rochefort, Lihuai Qian and the collaborative duo Thukral & Tagra have each created an original work that explores, through their own artistic language, what lies beneath the surface of things. These creations unfold across four cities steeped in cultural significance: Beijing, New York, Milan and Mumbai, each location adding its own particular resonance to the dialogue between art and craft.
Accompanying this artistic journey is Italian filmmaker and photographer Yuri Ancarani, whose lens captures both the genesis of each artwork and the intricate choreography of creating a Canali jacket. Through film and photography, Ancarani illuminates the profound parallels between artistic creation and the methodical, almost ritualistic process of tailoring, revealing how both disciplines demand an almost devotional attention to detail and intention.
The Journey Unfolds
The inaugural moment of this remarkable project commences in Beijing on 23 October, with artist Lihuai Qian. From this vantage point, the project unfolds as a sophisticated conversation between worlds that have always shared more than initially meets the eye: a shared belief in the transformative power of meticulous craft, an understanding that true luxury emerges from what cannot be seen as much as from what can, and a conviction that the journey toward completion is as worthy of celebration as the finished creation itself.
In this moment, Canali affirms its position not merely as a purveyor of exceptional tailoring, but as a cultural custodian; a house that recognises and celebrates the profound artistry that exists in the spaces between vision and realisation.
