Côte & Ciel creates soft architecture for sound at Oude Kerk

Within Amsterdam's monumental church, inflatable pillows become a communal listening environment where visitors settle into music through their bodies. The Post Space installation by Minimal Collective considers how furniture shapes not just space, but the intimate act of hearing.

Within the stone walls of Oude Kerk in Amsterdam’s medieval heart, Côte & Ciel and Minimal Collective transformed the historic church into a landscape of soft, responsive forms. Over three days, inflatable pillows scattered across the floor became the primary language of the space, inviting visitors to settle into a collective listening environment where individual experience and shared movement coexist.

The installation operates on a simple yet profound principle: furniture need not be static. Each pillow responds to the body’s weight and motion, creating a physical dialogue between visitor and form. As music moved through the space, bodies fidgeted and danced gently upon these pneumatic surfaces, allowing sound to travel through the floor and into the architecture of the human frame. The furniture’s softness, its capacity to yield and reform, introduced an entirely different physical language against the architectural stillness surrounding it.

The genius of the installation lies in this tension between the monumental and the intimate. Oude Kerk’s rigid stonework, its centuries of weight and permanence, met with Côte & Ciel’s philosophy of responsive, adaptive design. Visitors moved through the space not as passive observers but as active participants, their gestures becoming part of a larger choreography of collective experience. The subtle shift of one body registered across the pillows, creating a continuity of movement and exchange.

Post Space closed after its final night, but the work leaves a lasting impression: a conversation between hard and soft, stillness and motion, individual and community. Côte & Ciel’s contribution reframes what furniture can accomplish when designed not merely for comfort, but for connection.
