When traditional craft knowledge finds its way into contemporary architectural language, something remarkably resonant emerges. Faham, the Emirati design house, recognises this truth in its inaugural participation at Dubai Design Week, where it serves as Material Supporter for Taleem, an installation by the Dubai based architectural practice VARUSSI. The collaboration speaks to something quietly profound: how indigenous design wisdom and modern creative inquiry can inhabit the same space, enriching one another through dialogue.

Taleem draws its conceptual architecture from the coded notations employed in traditional Kashmiri carpet and Kani shawl making, those intricate systems of instruction passed down through generations. VARUSSI, founded by Kashmiri architects Owais Asif Khan and Samreen Junaid Wani, transforms this inherited language into a spatial experience. Visitors encounter rhythm and repetition made tangible, where the ancient grammar of craft becomes an invitation to understanding. The installation unfolds through reclaimed construction timber, each element sourced, fabricated and assembled locally across the Emirates, embodying a philosophy of material stewardship that extends beyond the exhibition itself.

The work sits within Abwab’s In Other Words exhibition, a curated programme that examines how knowledge and meaning traverse cultures and generations through materials, gestures and systems of making. It is precisely this territory that Faham occupies as a design house: the intersection of heritage and contemporary vision, where the hand made wisdom of the past informs the thinking of the present. As a 100 percent UAE made enterprise, Faham contributes not merely as a material partner but as a voice affirming how Emirati design practice can hold its own within an increasingly interconnected creative landscape.

The decision to support Taleem reflects an understanding that design’s most generous gesture lies in enabling others to create more fully. By providing material resources and local expertise, Faham amplifies a conversation about sustainability, craft and the future of how we inhabit space. This is design thinking at its most elevated: not the pursuit of surfaces, but the championing of substance.

Dubai Design Week runs from 3 to 8 November at Dubai Design District, and Taleem, within Abwab’s 2026 programme, represents one of several projects examining how the world’s creative practitioners are reshaping our understanding of design’s purpose. For Faham, the participation marks a significant milestone in an evolving narrative of Emirati contribution to global design discourse.
