Fine Cell Work’s embroidered swallows take flight in charity auction
In Flight, a collaboration between Fine Cell Work stitchers and lead designer Charlotte Derby, channels freedom and resilience through hand embroidered birds soaring across silk and wool. The work goes to auction tomorrow to support the organisation's rehabilitative programmes across UK prisons.

Swallows suspended in flight across layered washes of blue and mauve, their wings rendered in navy silk thread and cream wool, suggest something beyond the frame itself: possibility, transformation, the idea of escape made tangible through the hands that stitched them. In Flight, created through a collaboration between Fine Cell Work’s stitchers and lead designer Charlotte Derby, emerged from a simple but profound question posed to the organisation’s community: what does Fine Cell Work mean to you.
The responses shaped the work’s vocabulary. Freedom, resilience, joy. These words became visual through swallows in perpetual motion, their bodies delicate and purposeful against a watercolour ground that shifts between soft pink, powder blue and cream. The composition has the quality of a moment glimpsed through a window, suspended between earth and sky, between stasis and flight.

The piece measures 78.2 by 100.2 centimetres, framed in pale wood that echoes the birds’ cream underbellies. Every stitch, every colour choice carries intention: the work of prisoners engaged in Fine Cell Work’s programmes, channelling their creativity into textiles that speak of hope and human possibility. The craftsmanship is visible in the thread work’s subtle texture, the precision of wing detail, the considered restraint of the palette.
In Flight forms the centrepiece of an auction that runs online through November 4 at 9am, alongside works by artists including Wolfgang Tillmans, Antony Gormley and Conrad Shawcross. All proceeds support Fine Cell Work’s in prison rehabilitative programmes across the UK. For those who prefer to bid in person, a reception and live auction takes place tomorrow evening from 6 to 8pm at Ben Elwes Fine Art, 45 Maddox Street, London, W1S 2BE. Those wishing to attend should write to events@finecellwork.co.uk.
