The Yacht Club de Monaco has opened its Design Challenge to university students and teams worldwide, seeking innovative designs for the next common catamaran platform of the Monaco Energy Class. The brief is elegantly simple: two hulls, open integration, maximum efficiency. This represents an opportunity for emerging naval architects and engineering minds to shape the future of competitive sailing on a platform that bridges cutting edge performance with sustainable marine design.

Each competing team will retain ownership of its own cockpit, energy system and propulsion, installing these bespoke components onto the newly designed platform. This framework encourages both standardisation and individuality, allowing creative freedom within carefully considered technical parameters. The maximum dimensions are set at 5.50 metres overall length and 2.60 metres beam, constraints that demand thoughtful engineering and innovative solutions.

Submissions close on 1 May 2027. The finalists will present their designs in Monaco during the MEBC World Final, running from 29 June to 3 July 2027, a gathering that celebrates the convergence of competitive sailing, technological advancement and the Principality’s enduring position as a capital of advanced yachting. The winning designers receive a prize of €1,000. Full technical specifications and submission requirements are available at monacoenergyboatchallenge.com/design challenge/
