The Lupin emerges as one of those rare objects that somehow manages to be both sculptural and intimate, a hand blown glass form that catches the light from within. The base is crowned with a shade in gathered chiffon, fabric folded into soft, deliberate pleats that soften the glow and create movement where there is none. The lamp stands at one hundred and five centimetres tall, substantial enough to command attention from a corner yet refined enough to disappear into a thoughtfully composed interior.
Founded in 1996 by British designers Joanna Bibby and Harriet Maxwell Macdonald, and later joined by Solenne de la Fouchardière, OCHRE has long concerned itself with the particular alchemy of proportion, material and craft. The designs are inspired by the innate beauty of natural materials and traditional hand forming techniques, and possess a striking yet timeless elegance. Each design, through its story, making and material, is intimately connected to the earth and meant to last a lifetime.
The Lupin appears here in charcoal and deep navy, though the lamp comes in blue or natural grey glass with patinated bronze fittings, with shade options in asymmetric card or gathered chiffon in blue, chocolate brown card or gathered grey chiffon. The effect in any colourway remains constant: a quiet luminescence born not from boldness but from an understanding of how light and fabric converse. OCHRE maintains showrooms on Pimlico Road in London and New York.
