Patek Philippe’s esteemed Rare Handcrafts division has unveiled an extraordinary pocket watch that stands as a masterwork of horological artistry and technical virtuosity. The Burano Ref. 992/193 in yellow gold represents an homage to the celebrated Venetian island, whose enchanting canals and vibrantly hued buildings have long captivated the cultured imagination.

The timepiece exemplifies the rarefied craft traditions that have defined Patek Philippe’s approach to haute horlogerie for generations. The case back presents hand executed guilloché work rendered in a wave pattern, deliberately engineered to remain visible beneath translucent enamel, creating depth and movement across the surface. This foundational artistry is merely the prelude to the extraordinary decorative work that follows.

A Symphony of Enameling Mastery
The cloisonné enameling represents a labour of incomparable dedication, employing approximately 2.8 metres of meticulously applied gold wire weighing some 1.75 grammes. The craftspeople have worked with a considerable palette encompassing seventy distinct colours in transparent, opaque and semi opaque tones, each carefully selected and precisely placed to capture the luminous character of Burano’s waterside setting.

The sparkling reflections that animate the water’s surface have been achieved through the paillonné enameling technique, wherein gossamer thin sheets of gold and silver leaf are strategically embedded beneath the enamel layers to capture and refract light. The case back alone has undergone approximately fifteen individual firings at 800 degrees Celsius, each successive heat application demanding absolute precision to preserve the integrity of preceding layers whilst developing the colours to their full maturity.

The Accompanying Presentation
The pocket watch is presented upon a bespoke stand crafted from yellow gold, itself a sculptural achievement. An elegant arc adorned with a finely executed capstan knot provides the architectural framework, whilst eight rings set throughout showcase 108 spinel gems totalling 1.15 carats and 102 sapphires weighing 1.18 carats. This complementary piece elevates the presentation to the realm of furnishing luxury.

The Burano pocket watch is being exhibited at the WATCH ART Grand Exhibition in Milan, a biennial celebration of horological creativity that stands as one of the world’s most prestigious platforms for watchmaking excellence. The exhibition takes place at CityOval within the CityLife development, welcoming connoisseurs and collectors throughout October.

This remarkable creation embodies Patek Philippe’s unwavering commitment to preserving and advancing the ancient craft traditions that form the foundation of exceptional watchmaking, offering contemporary collectors a tangible connection to centuries of artisanal mastery.
