Robin Uthappa moves from Abu Dhabi T10 to Mumbai Indians

Robin Uthappa has been appointed Batting Coach of Mumbai Indians, commencing with the 2027 Indian Premier League season. The move represents a natural evolution for a cricketer whose mastery of the shorter formats has made him an invaluable asset across multiple formats and competition structures.

Uthappa currently serves as Team Director for Yasalanka Lions in the Abu Dhabi T10, the world’s fastest format of competitive cricket. His tenure with the franchise in this year’s tournament has been marked by the kind of strategic acumen and technical insight that elite franchises seek when building their coaching infrastructure. The transition from the rapid, decisive rhythms of ten over cricket to the slightly more expansive canvas of T20 represents a vertical shift in his career trajectory, one that acknowledges his comprehensive understanding of batting principles across all abbreviated formats.

His appointment to the Mumbai Indians coaching staff reflects the franchise’s commitment to recruiting individuals whose playing credentials carry weight in the modern game. Uthappa’s experience navigating the pressures of international cricket, combined with his work at the Abu Dhabi T10, positions him to guide the franchise’s batting unit through the complexities of IPL competition. The role demands not merely technical expertise but the ability to read conditions, manage individual player temperament and contribute to franchise culture during the intensity of the tournament.

This appointment underscores the Abu Dhabi T10’s position as both a premier competitive platform and a source of emerging coaching talent. The tournament continues to attract accomplished figures from world cricket, creating a pipeline of expertise that flows outward to larger stages, whilst maintaining its standing as cricket’s most concentrated and compelling format.
