Tesla is recalling approximately 2.98 million vehicles in China after regulators identified a potential safety issue involving emergency mechanical door releases. The affected vehicles include China-made and imported versions of the Model 3, Model Y, Model X and Model S. According to China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), the recall is scheduled to begin on 25 September 2026.

The concern is not simply the operation of Tesla’s exterior flush-mounted handles, but the visibility and usability of emergency mechanical releases inside the vehicle. SAMR said that, in an extreme situation such as a severe collision that causes the vehicle’s low-voltage electrical system to fail, the releases may be difficult to recognise and operate. The recall covers 973,156 domestically produced Model 3 vehicles and 1,956,713 China-made Model Y vehicles. It also includes imported examples of the Model 3, Model X and Model S, bringing the total number of vehicles affected by the door-release issue to 2,975,910.
Tesla’s remedy combines a physical change with a software update. The company will add warning labels to the relevant vehicles to make the emergency mechanical releases easier to identify. It will also update the window-control software through an over-the-air system, introducing a strategy designed to lower the windows following a collision. Vehicles that already carry the required warning markings will not need them installed again.
The scale of the action places it within a much broader reassessment of emergency access in China’s rapidly expanding electric-vehicle market. China’s regulators have been moving towards stricter requirements in this area. Earlier this year, authorities announced plans to prohibit concealed door handles on new vehicles from 2027, reflecting heightened scrutiny of designs that could complicate emergency access. The latest recall therefore arrives during a broader regulatory shift rather than as an isolated action against one manufacturer.
The issue also illustrates how quickly automotive regulation is adapting to the technological changes introduced by electric vehicles. Modern cars increasingly depend on software, sensors, electronic controls and integrated systems, making the distinction between mechanical and digital safety measures less straightforward than it once was.
Tesla’s response demonstrates that distinction particularly clearly. Rather than requiring a comprehensive physical redesign of the affected vehicles, the recall uses an over-the-air software update to alter vehicle behaviour following a crash, alongside clearer physical identification of the emergency release. This approach allows a large number of vehicles to receive the corrective measures without necessarily requiring every owner to visit a service centre.
The company is facing a separate recall in China at the same time. SAMR has also required Tesla to recall approximately 2.74 million China-made Model 3 and Model Y vehicles over driver-attention monitoring when assisted-steering and other driver-assistance functions are being used. Tesla plans to address that issue through another over-the-air software update, adding cabin-camera monitoring alongside existing steering-wheel torque monitoring. Vehicles unable to receive the update remotely will be handled through Tesla service centres.

For Tesla, the developments arrive against the backdrop of an increasingly competitive Chinese electric-vehicle market. The country has become one of the world’s most important arenas for electric-car development, with established international manufacturers competing alongside technology companies and newer domestic EV specialists. As these vehicles become more sophisticated, regulators are placing greater emphasis on whether innovation works reliably in circumstances that are far removed from normal driving.
The door-handle recall is therefore significant beyond the individual vehicles involved. It raises a broader design question: how should manufacturers balance the visual and technological language of the modern car with the simple, immediate requirements of safety? A concealed handle may contribute to a clean exterior, but in an emergency the priority is unmistakable access.
