Chef Marco Birlo’s intimate dining counter at Zurich Main Station will open for Sunday lunch from 15 November through 20 December, extending its reach beyond the evening service that has established its reputation. The temporary midday schedule offers an unexpected respite during the final stretch before Christmas, presenting an opportunity for family gatherings or long overdue occasions with friends who perpetually defer their reservation.

The Counter’s philosophy centres on an unflinching attention to detail and composition. The opening image reveals this sensibility entirely: two croquettes of pale yellow potato and white cheese sit elevated on a ceramic pedestal beneath a charred timber element, their golden crusts precise and their construction purposeful. A second plate shows the kitchen’s textural vocabulary: a disc of pale mousse anchors a composition of dark chocolate fragments, crisp wafer rolls and white spheres of foam, each element chosen with measured intent. The third image captures a moment of service, caramelised bread rolls beneath a spoon releasing glossy caramel sauce, accompanied by a quenelle of cream and crushed biscuit.

This is cooking that rewards attention. The Counter operates with the discipline of a jeweller rather than the exuberance of spectacle. Each plate demands to be understood before it is consumed. The midday iteration preserves this rigour while acknowledging the different rhythm of lunch, when natural light crosses the dining counter and the city’s momentum flows beyond the windows.

Reservations may be made through the restaurant’s booking system. The Counter operates Sundays only during this period.
