A cylindrical void rises through the heart of Cape Town Edition, its concrete walls tracing the geometry of a spiral staircase that climbs toward an open aperture to the sky. This is The Drum, the hotel’s architectural centrepiece, where raw materiality and programmatic void become indistinguishable. The staircase itself, rendered in dark steel, ascends without the usual hesitation of landings, a continuous gesture that pulls the eye upward and, with it, the light that pours through the opening above.

The conception belongs to the architectural language that Edition has refined across its portfolio: spaces where the structural and the experiential merge, where the building’s bones become the guest’s navigation. The Drum channels Atlantic breezes through multiple levels of the hotel, its open throat creating continuous air movement that reaches deeper into the building than conventional mechanical systems alone could achieve. Natural light becomes a material as significant as the concrete that frames it.

Viewed from the surrounding circulation galleries, the staircase reads as sculpture. The second image captures this from the lower levels, where a spiralling black metal railing echoes the geometry overhead, and warm brick walls anchor the composition against the weight of concrete. The third image shows how the cylinder frames pure sky, a geometric window to weather and time of day, collapsing the boundary between interior and exterior.

Cape Town Edition opens in the city’s V&A Waterfront precinct, where the hotel’s program wraps around this central void. The Drum functions simultaneously as wayfinding, ventilation, light source and philosophical statement about what a hotel’s common space might accomplish when architecture itself becomes the primary experience.
