The Ritual of Flocking: Where Craftsmanship Meets Pattern

Cole & Son recalls the tactile mastery behind its most textured designs, when Fridays in the factory were devoted entirely to an intricate process that transforms printed paper into sumptuous velvet effect walls.

The finest patterns often arrive not through speed but through ritual. At Cole & Son, Friday afternoons once belonged entirely to the flocking process, a deliberate sequestering of what was arguably the most labour intensive, most visually spectacular of all their manufacturing moments. The decision was born from necessity: those countless fibres, bouncing and adhering across the factory floor, would contaminate designs printed earlier in the week. And so Flocking Fridays became tradition, a weekly ceremony in the art of surface embellishment.

The process itself unfolds with the precision of textile craft. First comes the block printing, where adhesive is applied to ground paper in carefully considered patterns, each impression deliberate and controlled. The design emerges gradually, line by line, built through the maker’s hand and eye. Once this foundation is laid, the real artistry begins. The paper passes over a bed where flock fibres, lightweight and eager, are bounced onto the tacky surface, clinging only where the adhesive has been placed. The result is architecture at a microscopic scale: fibres standing at attention, creating texture and dimension that photographs cannot adequately convey.

What emerges from this labour is something that cannot be replicated by machine alone. The papers take on the appearance of cut velvet, that most luxurious of wall coverings, yet with a depth and authenticity that only genuine handcraft can deliver. Each sheet must then hang and dry, a patient pause before being carefully rolled and prepared for installation. The finished panels hold light differently than flat papers, catching it and softening it through the raised fibres, creating an effect that changes throughout the day.

Fanfare Flock and Pugin Palace Flock stand within Cole & Son’s current collection as enduring testament to this laborious method. Pugin Palace, rendered in a deep sapphire that reads contemporary despite its traditional composition, brings particular gravitas to drawing rooms and considered office spaces. The colour is neither predictable nor timid, and the textured surface elevates it beyond ordinary wallcovering into something closer to architectural finishings.

Though Flocking Fridays are no longer the rhythm of the factory floor, the memory of them lingers in every sheet of these papers. Cole & Son continues to honour that handcrafted legacy, understanding that some surfaces deserve more than efficiency, that true luxury requires patience, intention and the accumulated wisdom of processes refined across generations.
