Introduced in 2008, the Deepsea answered a problem that had defeated conventional case design. Rather than resist the weight of the ocean, its patented Ringlock System turns that force inward. A steel compression ring inside the case, held between a domed sapphire crystal 5.5mm thick and a titanium back, uses the pressure bearing down on it to tighten the seal. The deeper it goes, the more secure it becomes.
The result is a watch waterproof to 3,900 metres, or 12,800 feet, with a case engineered to withstand around three tonnes of force. A helium escape valve releases gas absorbed during saturation dives.

The current reference is 136660 in Oystersteel, 44mm across and 17.7mm thick, with a unidirectional Cerachrom bezel in black ceramic, its numerals coated in platinum, and a Triplock screw down crown. Inside is calibre 3235, the manufacture movement with a Chronergy escapement, Paraflex shock absorbers and a paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring. Power reserve is 70 hours. Rolex certifies it to within two seconds a day either way, tighter than the Swiss chronometer standard.
The gradient blue to black dial, known as D blue, arrived in 2014 as a tribute to James Cameron’s solo descent to the Mariana Trench. It reads as a compressed depth chart, shallow water giving way to the black of the deep, with Chromalight markers glowing against it.
In 2024 the Deepsea became a collection of its own, no longer carrying the Sea Dweller name on the dial.
