A wooden fishing boat with passengers glides through crystalline Mediterranean waters between the towering Faraglioni rocks of Capri, their white limestone faces rising sheer from the sea, sunlight dancing across the water

Perched on the edge of a 300 metre high cliff, directly above the sea, in the town of Anacapri, Hotel Caesar Augustus occupies the sort of location that makes the everyday world feel very far away. The light here is particular: afternoon sun strikes the limestone faces of the Faraglioni rocks with an intensity that turns the water below into a field of liquid silver, and from the hotel’s terrace, this view unfolds in its entirety. One does not need to amplify it.

The building dates back to the 1850s, and was transformed over 60 years ago into a hotel by the Signorini family, who remain its stewards. The guest rooms feature a stylish combination of modern furnishings and antique pieces. The Capri Master Suite occupies the entire top floor and measures 85 square metres with a 100 square metre furnished terrace, and the Caesar Master Suite, inspired by the architecture of ancient Rome, features graceful arches and columns with a large furnished terrace offering magnificent views of the sea surrounding Capri.

The hotel preserves a quality that cannot be manufactured: the sense of having arrived at something rare. Guests may relax with a drink at the bar overlooking the Bay of Naples or stroll in fragrant gardens, or they might simply do what Caesar Augustus did, and watch the light move across the water. Capri’s Piazzetta is a 10 minute taxi ride away for those who tire of quietude.
