Zhang Yunyao’s Graphite Studies Transform Surface Into Sentient Field

The Shanghai born artist presents a meditation on painting as thought itself, layering illusionistic abstraction with carved portraiture and classical studies. White Cube Hong Kong opens the exhibition this autumn.

There exists a peculiar alchemy in the moment when graphite meets felt, when the artist’s hand coaxes darkness from light and solid form from weightlessness. This is the territory that Zhang Yunyao inhabits, a space where painting becomes something altogether different from what we imagine: not a surface to gaze upon, but rather a field that gazes back.

The Shanghai born artist has long been preoccupied with the philosophical dimensions of mark making, with what happens when the gesture of drawing refuses to remain merely illustrative. Her recent body of work, which unfolds across large scale illusionistic abstractions, intimate studies of carved heads, and meditations on classical statuary, proposes a radically different relationship between viewer and image. Working with graphite on felt, she creates works that appear at once sculptural and ethereal, possessing a weight and density that simultaneously dissolves under scrutiny.

What makes this work particularly compelling is its refusal of easy categorisation. These are not paintings in the traditional sense, nor are they drawings. They exist in a liminal space, where the flatness of the two dimensional plane becomes three dimensional through pure tonal manipulation and the subtle interplay of material and mark. The felt ground absorbs the graphite differently than paper would, creating surfaces that seem to breathe, to recalibrate, to process the very act of looking.

A Sentient Surface

The exhibition title itself, ‘When the Surface Thinks’, articulates Yunyao’s central preoccupation. She approaches each work as an opportunity to render the surface as something animate, something capable of registering the world, reflecting upon it, and ultimately meditating upon its own nature. The close up studies of carved heads and classical forms become almost archaeological in their intensity, as though the artist is excavating meaning from stone, from history, from the accumulated weight of artistic tradition itself.

The larger abstractions, by contrast, propose a different kind of thinking. They are illusionistic in the most sophisticated sense, creating spatial depth and dimensional complexity that invite the eye to travel, to get lost, to reconsider what it believes it is witnessing. The graphite becomes almost immaterial against the felt, creating works of extraordinary subtlety and restraint.

This is painting conceived as a philosophical enquiry, as a mode of thinking made visible. It represents work of considerable intellectual rigour and sensual refinement, the product of an artist deeply committed to pushing beyond convention, to discovering new possibilities within seemingly exhausted materials and methods.

The exhibition opens to the public on 30 October, following an evening preview on 29 October, and remains on view at White Cube’s Hong Kong location until 18 December 2026.
