VOLKSWAGEN INTRODUCES A NEW 125 KW FULL HYBRID FOR THE GOLF AND T-ROC
Volkswagen is expanding its electrified line-up with a new full-hybrid system for the Golf and T-Roc, combining a 170 PS petrol-electric powertrain with the ability to drive temporarily on electric power without external charging. Volkswagen is taking another step in the evolution of its compact-car range with the introduction of a new full-hybrid powertrain for the Golf and T-Roc. Now entering pre-sales in Germany, the system initially arrives with 125 kW, equivalent to 170 PS, bringing together electric assistance, petrol power and regenerative energy recovery without requiring a charging cable or access to a charging station.

The proposition occupies an increasingly relevant middle ground. Unlike a mild hybrid, the new system is capable of powering the car temporarily through its electric motor alone. Unlike a plug-in hybrid, however, it does not depend on an external power supply. Instead, the energy required for electric driving is generated and recovered while the vehicle is in motion.
At the centre of the system is a 1.6 kWh gross high-voltage NMC battery positioned within the rear vehicle floor of both models. It works alongside Volkswagen’s 1.5 TSI evo2 turbocharged petrol engine, two electric machines and a generator. Together, these components produce the 125 kW system output while allowing the powertrain to adjust continuously to different driving conditions.
The technology is particularly suited to the rhythm of everyday driving. At low speeds, the electric motor can take over propulsion while the petrol engine is switched off, allowing the Golf Hybrid and T-Roc Hybrid to move quietly under electric power. When additional energy is required, the system can bring the petrol engine into operation, either to generate electricity or to contribute directly to propulsion.
Three operating modes govern this interaction. In electric propulsion mode, the vehicle is driven by the electric motor alone. Serial operation uses the electric motor for propulsion while the TSI engine, decoupled from the wheels, operates a generator to provide electrical energy. In parallel operation, the petrol engine becomes the primary source of propulsion, particularly from around 60 km/h on country roads and motorways, while the electric motor can provide additional assistance during acceleration.
For drivers, the result is intended to be a more seamless transition between petrol and electric power rather than a choice that requires manual intervention. The system manages the different sources of energy automatically, with recuperation helping replenish the battery during driving.
There are tangible efficiency benefits, too. Volkswagen states that the Golf Hybrid can reduce fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions by between 10 and 15 per cent compared with a comparable Golf 1.5 eTSI producing 110 kW, based on combined WLTP figures. In urban driving, where repeated acceleration, deceleration and low-speed running give the electric motor greater opportunities to operate, the company cites an efficiency advantage of up to 35 per cent.
The new powertrain also brings an increase in performance. The system develops 309 Nm of torque, enabling the Golf Hybrid to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds. Its combination of electric torque and petrol power is intended to provide stronger response without moving away from the refinement expected of the Golf.

The T-Roc receives the same 125 kW hybrid system, extending the technology into Volkswagen’s compact SUV range. Its combined WLTP consumption is quoted at 5.6–5.0 litres per 100 kilometres, with CO₂ emissions of 127–115 g/km. For the Golf Hybrid, the corresponding figures are 5.1–4.6 litres per 100 kilometres and 117–104 g/km. The precise figures vary according to specification and driving conditions.
Volkswagen has also incorporated three selectable driving profiles: Eco, Comfort and Sport. Eco limits maximum system output to 70 per cent and disables the boost function in the interests of efficiency. Comfort retains the full system output and allows electric boosting, while Sport alters the way the powertrain transitions between its operating modes, making full power available more readily.
For the German market, the Golf Hybrid is being offered from €41,400 in R-Line specification, while the T-Roc Style Hybrid starts at €44,470. Volkswagen has confirmed that these prices and specification details apply to Germany, with the first full-hybrid models expected to enter the wider portfolio from the fourth quarter of 2026.
The new system also clarifies Volkswagen’s broader electrification strategy. The company already offers mild-hybrid models under the eTSI designation, while the Golf range includes plug-in-hybrid versions under the eHybrid name as well as the performance-oriented Golf GTE. The new Hybrid designation therefore sits between those two technologies, providing electric driving capability without the charging requirements associated with a plug-in vehicle.
Volkswagen’s history gives the development considerable context. The company was formally established as the Gesellschaft zur Vorbereitung des Deutschen Volkswagens mbH on 28 May 1937, with its main production plant subsequently established in what became Wolfsburg. Following the Second World War, the Type 1 Beetle and later the Type 2 helped transform Volkswagen into one of Germany’s most recognisable automotive manufacturers, with the brand eventually developing a broad global portfolio spanning compact cars, SUVs, electric vehicles and commercial models.

Today, that heritage is being carried into a period of substantial technological change. Volkswagen’s strategy no longer treats electrification as a single path; instead, its portfolio encompasses battery-electric, plug-in-hybrid, mild-hybrid and now full-hybrid solutions, allowing different powertrains to address different patterns of use.
The arrival of the 125 kW system in the Golf and T-Roc is therefore significant less for its headline power figure than for its positioning. It addresses drivers who may want meaningful electric assistance and lower fuel use but do not have a reason to build their routine around charging infrastructure.
