GM OPENS PASADENA DESIGN STUDIO WITH GMC HUMMER X CONCEPTS

General Motors has opened the doors to its new Advanced Design Pasadena Studio, establishing a 148,000-square-foot creative campus dedicated to exploring what automotive design could look like beyond today’s production programmes. The opening was marked by the unveiling of the GMC HUMMER X, presented in both pickup and SUV forms as a study in adaptability, adventure and emerging manufacturing technology.
Spread across three buildings, the Pasadena facility brings together approximately 100 designers, sculptors, fabricators and artisan specialists. Its capabilities include full-size clay modelling, fabrication and immersive digital collaboration, giving the team the means to move between traditional automotive design practices and newer digital methods within a single environment.

The location itself is central to the studio’s purpose. Southern California has long provided GM designers with an unusually broad mix of influences, from film and architecture to aerospace, technology and the region’s distinctive vehicle culture. The new campus is intended to turn those influences into conceptual studies that can inform thinking across GM, particularly in areas that extend well beyond immediate production plans.
Its opening also continues a much longer relationship between GM and Southern California. Harley Earl, appointed the company’s first design director in 1927, was born and raised in Hollywood and began his career building custom cars for film stars. He later helped establish clay modelling as a fundamental part of automotive design, a practice that remains embedded in GM’s design process today.
GM established a permanent advanced design presence in Southern California during the 1980s. Over the decades, the region became a setting for experimental work across Chevrolet and other GM brands, as well as projects exploring autonomous mobility and future vehicle experiences. Pasadena now joins GM’s broader Advanced Design network, with other studios operating in Detroit, the UK and Shanghai.
Hussein Al Attar has been appointed director of the Pasadena studio, succeeding Brian Smith, who led the previous Pasadena operation for four years before returning to Michigan to work with the Chevrolet Corvette design team. Al Attar’s remit places him at the centre of a facility intended to question established assumptions about mobility while remaining grounded in physical design and engineering disciplines.
The first major expression of that philosophy is the GMC HUMMER X, a highly reconfigurable mid-size electric vehicle concept developed through collaboration between GM Advanced Engineering, Advanced Manufacturing and the Pasadena design team. It is not intended for production, but instead serves as a test bed for technologies, materials, manufacturing techniques, and ideas around how drivers might interact with their vehicles.

The HUMMER X exists in two forms: an SUV and a pickup. Both are conceived around four principles — reconfigurability, capability, community and sustainability — with the idea of adventure running through the project.
At the heart of its construction is FLEX FAB, a flexible manufacturing approach designed to support small-batch, on-demand production of metal components without requiring dedicated stamping tools for every variation. The process allows different designs to be produced using the same manufacturing equipment, opening up possibilities for vehicles and components that can be adapted more readily than conventional mass-production methods allow.
That manufacturing philosophy is visible in the HUMMER X’s exterior. Its form is deliberately clean and functional, with a flat-topped profile, radiused edges, laser-welded seams, and exposed precision bolts. The result is less concerned with decorative complexity than with making the construction itself part of the visual identity.
The concept’s interior follows the same principle of adaptability. Stackable displays allow the cockpit to be configured around different activities, from navigating difficult trails to driving on the road. The intention is to make the vehicle’s digital environment as flexible as its physical structure.
Capability remains central to the HUMMER X. The concepts are imagined as rock-crawling EVs, with a low centre of gravity, on-demand acceleration, large Goodyear off-road tyres, beadlock wheels, Multimatic shocks, removable fender flares and substantial underbody protection. The SUV measures 4,782.5mm in length, 2,032mm in width and 1,852.6mm in height, with 334.3mm of ground clearance. Its approach and departure angles are 44 and 46 degrees, respectively, while the breakover angle is 30.9 degrees.
The pickup stretches to 5,264.5mm in length and has a 3,318.6mm wheelbase. Ground clearance is 316.7mm, with approach, departure and breakover angles of 41.5, 29.7 and 24.9 degrees. It uses 22-inch aluminium wheels with 35-inch Goodyear tyres, while the SUV is equipped with 18-inch wheels and 37-inch tyres.
Yet the HUMMER X is conceived around more than physical capability. GM’s design team has identified a “builder maker” as the imagined user: someone interested not simply in driving a vehicle, but in modifying it, building around it and sharing those experiences with others.
That idea informs the HUMMER HUB, a proposed suite of connected applications designed to link drivers with their vehicles before, during, and after an expedition. One of the more unusual concepts is a scout drone capable of flying ahead of the vehicle, gathering terrain information and transmitting it back to the driver before returning to the HUMMER X to dock.
Sustainability is integrated into the concept at a material and manufacturing level. The design explores mono-material construction, using mechanical fasteners and snap-fit connections in place of adhesives where possible. Components can consequently be easier to disassemble, with the broader ambition of allowing parts to be replaced, shared or recirculated rather than discarded.

Some interior components are envisioned using recycled automotive materials, including seatbacks, headrest backs and instrument-panel sections made from recycled vehicle fascias. Even the concept’s smaller details reinforce its environmental narrative: its design team’s guiding phrase appears in Morse code on the floor, while the tyre tread carries the words associated with the project’s philosophy of discovery.
The wider heritage behind this work belongs to General Motors, founded by William Durant on 16 September 1908 in Flint, Michigan. The company began as a consolidation of automotive businesses, initially bringing Buick and Oldsmobile into its growing organisation, before developing into one of the world’s major automotive groups. Today, GM’s portfolio includes Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac, with a history shaped by engineering, manufacturing and design innovation across more than a century.
GMC itself has developed a particularly strong identity around trucks and SUVs, making the HUMMER X an appropriate vehicle through which to explore the relationship between rugged capability and emerging electric technology. The current HUMMER EV has already brought the HUMMER name back into the GMC portfolio as an electric vehicle; the X concepts take that lineage in a smaller, more experimental direction.

The Pasadena studio ultimately represents an investment in the space between today’s vehicles and the possibilities beyond them. The HUMMER X is unlikely to appear on a showroom floor, but that is precisely what gives the project room to experiment. Its value lies in testing how manufacturing, materials, connectivity, and electric capability might come together when designers are allowed to begin with a question rather than a production deadline.
For GM, the new Pasadena campus continues a Southern California design tradition while giving it a distinctly contemporary purpose. And in the HUMMER X, that purpose takes physical form: a vehicle conceived not simply to travel farther, but to invite a different relationship with how it is built, adapted, and experienced.
