The lounge at Tramp, restored in the spirit of the seventies

There are doors in London that open onto rooms, and there are doors that open onto legend. Since December 1969, those of 40 Jermyn Street have belonged firmly to the latter. Founded by Johnny Gold, Oscar Lerman and Bill Ofner, and named in homage to Charlie Chaplin’s Tramp, the club became the most discreet and most beloved address in London nightlife.

Behind its oak panelling and beneath its chandeliers, photographs were never taken and confidences were always kept. Three hundred founding members, each paying ten guineas a year, set the tone for a house where Frank Sinatra and Grace Kelly, Michael Caine and Mick Jagger came simply to be left in peace.

In 2023 the club passed into the custody of hospitality entrepreneur Luca Maggiora, who closed its doors for a painstaking restoration. Tramp reopened in September 2024 as a private members club, its spirit of the seventies lovingly preserved: intimate dining and drinking rooms, leopard print velvet, candlelight on dark wood and the unmistakable sense that the night is only beginning.

By day, the legend continues at Tramp Health, its sister club in Mayfair, devoted to longevity and wellbeing. By night, Tramp remains exactly what its founders intended: since 1969, a place to belong.
