PUBLIC West Hollywood: Ian Schrager Raises a Private Park Above the Sunset Strip
Ian Schrager has opened PUBLIC West Hollywood on the Sunset Strip: 137 rooms that are each a private screening room, a nightclub conceived as the heir to Studio 54, and The Roof, three quarters of an acre of private parkland high above Los Angeles.

Few names have rewritten the grammar of hospitality as completely as Ian Schrager. From the seismic cultural explosion of Studio 54 in 1977 to the invention of the boutique hotel with Morgans in 1982, and onward through more than forty original hotels around the world, he has spent five decades setting the standard that others later follow. Today, on the legendary Sunset Strip, he opens what may prove to be his most groundbreaking hotel of all: PUBLIC West Hollywood.
It is the West Coast debut of Schrager’s philosophy of Luxury For All, an idea that sets aside the old signals of status in favour of something more personal and more modern. Here, luxury means comfort, ease, freedom and time, delivered with service that is attentive, unscripted and quietly assured.

A hotel of beautiful contradictions
PUBLIC West Hollywood is conceived as a meeting of opposites: maximal and minimal, glamour and comfort, energy and calm, drawn together by world class talent from across the globe and grounded firmly in the soul of California. Seventy five percent of the hotel’s public space lies outdoors, an open air expression of the Southern Californian way of life, with dining beneath the sky, relaxed working, lounging in the sun and late gatherings under the stars.
The hotel is defined as much by what it leaves out as by what it offers. There is no traditional front desk to stand between guest and experience, so arrival is swift and the room is reached without ceremony. Every detail is pared back to its essence: intimacy, warmth, connection and comfort. As Schrager is fond of reminding us, in the words of Leonardo da Vinci, simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

The Roof: a private park in the sky
The crowning glory is The Roof, three quarters of an acre of private parkland, some 16,000 square feet, with sweeping 360 degree views across the Hollywood Hills, Downtown Los Angeles and the LA Basin. It is the only private park in the city, and it has been shaped with undulating topography, swings, picnic tables, campfires and art installations, together with sport, daily wellness classes and an oversized 30 foot outdoor movie screen.
Inspired by the great parks of the world, from Central Park and the Tuileries to Hyde Park and Griffith Park, The Roof is at once playground and sanctuary, an oasis suspended above one of the most celebrated cityscapes on earth, and a setting of rare distinction for private events.

137 rooms, each a private screening room
The 137 guestrooms, suites and penthouses are, in Schrager’s word, anti design: simple, refined and judged not by how they look but by how they make you feel. Each is built around its own private screening room, with an 11 foot wide floor to ceiling projection surface and a specially designed short throw laser projector of 5,000 lumens with 4K enhancement. It is theatre on demand, enjoyed in the privacy of one’s own bedroom, in the film capital of the world.

Dining, the pool and the nightclub
Three food, beverage and entertainment venues offer cooking that is easy, generous and rooted in quality and freshness, while a lushly landscaped pool brings the California sun to the heart of the hotel. When night falls, PUBLIC reveals another side: an intimate, speakeasy style nightclub devoted to sound, with an elegant symphony of black finishes, conceived by Schrager as the evolution of Studio 54.

Luxury for all
I have always sought to go where no one else has gone. To stand alone.
Ian Schrager
PUBLIC West Hollywood is both a continuation and a reinvention: independent, unclassifiable and original, and a confident new benchmark for what a hotel can be. For Schrager, a hotel is never simply a place to sleep. It is a mirror of society, a theatre for life and a vision of the future, and on the Sunset Strip that vision has now opened its doors.
PUBLIC West Hollywood opens on 30 October 2026 and reservations are now open.
