Shangri-La Signatures Expands to Kyoto with 77-Key Songtei

Shangri-La is extending its most rarefied hotel concept to Kyoto with Songtei Kyoto, Shangri-La Signatures, a 77-key property positioned opposite Nijo Castle. Due to begin welcoming guests from late 2026, the hotel will become only the second address in the Signatures portfolio, following The Silk Lakehouse on Hangzhou’s West Lake.

A more intimate expression of Shangri-La

Shangri-La Signatures has been conceived as the group’s ultra-luxury boutique tier: smaller in scale, more residential in atmosphere and more closely tied to the provenance of each location. Songtei Kyoto is intended to interpret the quiet grandeur of the city’s Edo-period residences through contemporary design rather than reproduce historical interiors literally.

The setting gives the project an unusually strong sense of place. Nijo Castle is one of Kyoto’s most significant cultural landmarks, and the hotel’s position opposite the UNESCO World Heritage Site places history immediately outside the front door. Shangri-La says the experience will extend beyond design into art, wellness, gastronomy and storytelling, with personalised hosting forming the connective thread.

Kyoto as a living narrative

The decision to bring Signatures to Kyoto reflects the way high-end hospitality is moving away from scale and towards specificity. A 77-room hotel can build a different rhythm from a large international resort, particularly in a city where the value of a stay often lies in access, context and cultural interpretation rather than an inventory of facilities.

The first Signatures hotel, The Silk Lakehouse in Hangzhou, established that approach around West Lake and has since received international recognition. Kyoto gives the collection a second UNESCO-adjacent setting, but with a very different cultural vocabulary: ceremonial architecture, gardens, craft traditions and one of the world’s most mature luxury-travel markets.

Further details — including room categories, culinary concepts and reservations — are still to come, and Shangri-La says additional facilities will open progressively before a full unveiling in early 2027. That staged arrival may suit a property built around intimacy rather than spectacle.

For Simply Luxury, Songtei Kyoto is one to watch because it demonstrates where the next layer of global luxury hospitality is heading: fewer rooms, deeper storytelling, a stronger relationship with place and a brand identity confident enough to recede behind the destination.
